The Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) Mastercard Foundation Health Collaborative has announced its commitment to offering health-related programmes designed to equip persons living with disabilities (PWDs) with the necessary skills and knowledge to increase their job prospects in the health sector. The pillar lead for Health Ecosystem under the Health Collaborative, Dr. Joseph Owusu, revealed that 20 PWDs will benefit from free tuition, stipend, and free accommodation every year for the next five years, with a goal to train 100 PWDs in the next five years.

According to the United Nations estimates, about 80-90 per cent of PWDs of working age in developing countries are unemployed. Therefore, KNUST Mastercard Health Collaborative organised a stakeholder engagement for PWDs to assist them in accessing decent, dignified, and fulfilling jobs in the health sector through the acquisition of knowledge and skills. The programmes include Health Communication Agents, Medicine Counter Assistants, Health Information Management, Medical Laboratory Sciences, and Phlebotomy.

Dr. Owusu emphasized that the programmes are designed to equip PWDs with the requisite skills and knowledge that could enable them to access employment in the health sector. Mr. Karim Iddrisu, the Chairman of the Ghana Society for the Physically Disabled, Obuasi Municipal, expressed his delight in the programme, saying it would give PWDs a better quality of life. He added that “once we gain the knowledge and skills from Mastercard Health Collaborative, it’s a step in the right direction. It’s a good initiative for us.”

In conclusion, KNUST Mastercard Health Collaborative’s decision to offer health-related programmes for PWDs is a significant move towards reducing the high unemployment rate among PWDs. This initiative will undoubtedly provide opportunities for PWDs to acquire skills and knowledge that will increase their employability, giving them a better chance of leading a dignified and fulfilling life.
