Polymelia occurs in approximately 6 per 10,000 live births, with lower limb cases being particularly rare.
Preparation and Surgery:
Prior to the six-hour operation, extensive discussions and education took place between the medical team and the baby’s parents. The team provided psychological counselling, ensuring the family was well-informed about the procedure, potential outcomes, and possible complications. Five months of meticulous preparations and pre-operative investigations, including CT scans, MRI, echo, and ultrasound, were conducted to detect any additional abnormalities.
On February 20, 2023, the complex surgical repair operation commenced, led by Dr. Konadu-Yeboah and a multidisciplinary team of experts. The immediate and intermediate postoperative periods were successfully managed without complications, and the baby is steadily recovering as expected. Further minor procedures and surgical interventions will be performed to fully restore normal functioning for the infant.
