The British Academy Global Innovation Fellowships are designed to give UK-based early- and mid-career researchers in the humanities and social sciences the chance to advance their careers and build their networks in the public, private, and policy sectors while also addressing challenges that call for creative approaches and solutions.
Researchers in the SHAPE community will get support through the Global Innovation Fellowships to forge new and deeper connections outside of academia, facilitating the mobilisation and translation of information as well as the development of personal skills.
The International Science Partnerships Fund of the UK Government provides funding for this programme. The goal of the £119 million International Science Partnerships Fund is to unlock potential and promote economic growth.
It prioritises research and innovation in the UK’s foreign relations and encourages UK researchers and innovators to collaborate with peers throughout the globe on the most important issues of the day. The Department for Science, Innovation & Technology is in charge of running it. delivered by a group of the UK’s top organisations for research and innovation.
About The British Academy
The British Academy is the United Kingdom’s national academy for the humanities and the social sciences. It was established in 1902 and received its royal charter in the same year. It is now a fellowship of more than 1,000 leading scholars spanning all disciplines across the humanities and social sciences and a funding body for research projects across the United Kingdom. The academy is a self-governing and independent registered charity, based at 10–11 Carlton House Terrace in London.
Benefits of British Academy Global Innovation Fellowships
These are offered as awards for up to £150,000 for 12 months in duration (with Full Economic Costing at 80%).

Applications are invited in any of the following five areas:
- Sustainability, Climate and Geopolitics.
- Technology and International Affairs.
- Democracy, Conflict & Governance.
- Global Order and Institutions.
- Nuclear Policy.

There are not any preconceived ideas about the disciplinary background of the award holder, but the applicant will need to demonstrate a solid understanding of the relevant issues, including the applicable policy landscape and the systemic challenges that it faces. Language skills where relevant are desirable but not essential.
Interview date, Process and Venue for British Academy Global Innovation Fellowships
Global Innovation Fellowships are expected to commence by September 2024. An earlier start date of March or April 2024 may be possible, in this case the applicant will need to explain how they will plan and manage their relocation on this faster timeline.
