The Environmental Reporting Collective (ERC) is once again open to receiving applications for its Collaborative Reporting Grants, which aim to assist journalists collaborating on the investigation of environmental crimes that span international boundaries.
In the year 2022, the ERC provided support to nine teams of journalists operating across numerous countries. This collaboration enabled these journalists to delve into global narratives from a local vantage point, while also pioneering fresh and inventive methods of storytelling. Their efforts unveiled environmental concerns worldwide, ranging from the impact of oil and gas combustion on minority populations in northern Iraq to the connection between retreating glaciers in the Himalayas and food insecurity. Furthermore, they explored how local communities were adopting community-based strategies for adaptation.
In the current phase, the ERC is seeking to back analogous narratives, including reports focused on sand mining as a follow-up to the project “Beneath the Sands.” The grants aim to foster partnerships among journalists hailing from different nations, thereby addressing gaps in each other’s reporting. Applications must feature a minimum of two journalists or news organizations from distinct countries or regions. Freelance journalists are also encouraged to submit their proposals.

Benefits of ERC Collaborative Reporting Grants
- ERC will support a maximum of five reporting teams.
- Apart from the financial support, ERC offers the opportunity to work on an underreported environmental issue in a collaborative manner. We can also connect you with mentors and our network of experts as well as relevant training opportunities.
Requirements for ERC Collaborative Reporting Grants
At least two journalists working from two different countries or regions. Staff or freelance reporters are welcome to apply.
Documents Required for Application
- For freelance journalists, a letter of interest from a news outlet that is willing or committed to publish your story.
- For media outlets, data about your reach, audience, and links to previous investigations. Note: News outlets are strongly encouraged to sign up as a partner newsroom with ERC before or when applying, but it’s not required and will not jeopardize their application.
- For staff writers, a letter of support from an editor in your newsroom.
- A one-page story proposal with details of your idea and reporting plan. The proposal must emphasize what’s going to be new or revelatory about your story and how each reporter will contribute to the story.
- A budget that lays out the anticipated expenses for the project. This may include fees for records requests, travel and lodging, and stipend for freelance reporters. Please use ERC’s budget template here.
- Resumes for each journalist with links to previously published reports and at least two professional references.
