Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) is a public research university located in Kumasi, Ghana. It was established in 1951 as the Kumasi College of Technology and was renamed the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology in 1961 in honor of Ghana’s first president, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah.

The idea for the Kumasi College of Technology was conceived in the early 1940s by the Asantehene, Sir Osei Tutu II. He believed that technical training was essential for the development of Ghana and proposed that a technical institute be established in Kumasi.

The British colonial government agreed to the proposal and in 1949, the Kumasi College of Technology opened its doors to 200 students in a temporary campus at the Kumasi Fort. The college initially offered courses in engineering and building technology.

In 1952, the college moved to its permanent campus in Kumasi and began offering courses in science and agriculture. Over the years, more faculties were added including medicine, law, social sciences, and arts. Today, KNUST is the largest university in Kumasi and one of the leading universities in Ghana.

KNUST has a rich history of producing some of the most talented and renowned professionals in Ghana and beyond. Notable alumni include the President of Ghana, Nana Akufo-Addo, and the CEO of Google Africa, Sundar Pichai.

The university boasts of state-of-the-art facilities including modern lecture halls, research centers, and medical facilities. KNUST also has a vibrant student life with various student organizations, clubs, and sports teams.

In addition to academic excellence, KNUST is also recognized for its contribution to research and innovation. The university has numerous research centers and institutes focusing on areas such as science, engineering, and technology.
