The Vice Chancellor of Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), is Professor (Mrs.) Rita Akosua Dickson, a renowned academic with a wealth of experience in higher education administration.
Prof. Dickson was born on 22nd September, 1963, in Kumasi, Ghana. She had her early education at Holy Child School, Cape Coast, and continued her secondary education at Wesley Girls’ High School, Cape Coast. Prof. Dickson holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Home Science (Clothing & Textiles) from the University of Ghana, Legon, and a Postgraduate Diploma in Clothing and Textiles from the Chelsea College of Science and Technology, University of London. She also has a Master of Arts degree in Design from the University of Leeds, UK, and a PhD in Design and Textiles from the University of Manchester, UK.
Prof. Dickson began her career as a lecturer at KNUST in 1992, and rose through the ranks to become a professor in 2009. She has served the university in various capacities, including Head of the Department of Clothing and Textiles, Dean of the Faculty of Art, and Deputy Vice Chancellor. In 2018, Prof. Dickson was appointed as the first female Vice Chancellor of KNUST, succeeding Prof. Kwasi Obiri-Danso.
Under her leadership, KNUST has made significant strides in academic excellence, research, and innovation. She has initiated several projects to address the needs of the university and the wider community, including the construction of a state-of-the-art research laboratory, and the establishment of innovation hubs to promote entrepreneurship among students.
Prof. Dickson has also been recognized for her outstanding contribution to higher education in Ghana and across Africa. She is a Fellow of the Ghana Academy of Arts and Sciences, the International Textile and Apparel Association, and the International Society of Dyers and Colourists. In 2020, she was named among the top 50 most influential women in Ghana by The Africa Report, a leading pan-African magazine.
